Historical Note

The Tournament of Roses was started in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, California to promote the city's charm and weather for tourism. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to take over management of the festival as it had grown too large for the Valley Hunt Club to administer. The Rose Parade was part of the original celebration, and the Rose Bowl Game was added in 1902 becoming the first post-season football game in the United States between Stanford University and the University of Michigan. The Tournament of Roses has grown over the years and become widely regarded as "America's New Year Celebration."
