The stereoscope was invented by English physicist Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838 and were used as a form of entertainment for people to view and share three dimensional images during the Victorian era. The mechanism changed over time and in 1939 William Gruber invented the View-Master that used more compact circular reels that would become popular with children during the 1950s. Concepts of stereoscopy are still used today in three dimensional films... and virtual reality.
