Biographical Note

Arthur E. Nelson was appointed the first College Librarian at CSUSB on April 1, 1963. Nelson's title was later changed to Library Director in 1972, a post he would hold until March 31, 1988 when he returned to the ranks as Librarian. As the longest tenured library director in the California State University system, Nelson oversaw the growth of the CSUSB library for more than two decades and was instrumental in building the library's initial 50,000 volume collection. He was also responsible for establishing this collection of materials which would serve as a starting point for the University Archives which were later named in his honor. Nelson fully retired from the university in 1991 and later passed away on September 25, 2003 at the age of 76.
